Why Does MicroDermabrasion Cause My Skin to Break Out?

The most common side effect of microdermabrasion is an Acne breakout within the first few days after treatment.

Microdermabrasion is a superficial mechanical peel of the stratum corneum, (or the outer layer of dead, dry skin cells). Microderm exfoliates the surface layers, exposing the underlying, more hydrated layer of skin. The good news is that light reflecting off the more hydrated layers gives your face a certain “glow”. The bad news is that microderm temporarily compromises the stratum corneum, leaving it slightly more susceptible to p. acne infection. The side effect of a breakout is the result of p. acne bacterial infection via the compromised stratum corneum. Your stratum corneum is an amazing design. It’s like a flexible suit of armor that protects you against not only p. acne, but a myriad of environmental contaminants. As we age the stratum corneum becomes less compact, less hydrated, and less effective. A series of 6 or more microdermabrasion sessions is clinically proven to improve the health and effectiveness of the stratum corneum, making it more compact, and more hydrated. So you’re doing the right thing if you’re having microderm treatments. The key is proper post care to avoid the side effect of an Acne breakout.

We recommend infusion of a lipid repair serum (containing sphingolipids) after DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasion using the HydroWands. Also, topical application of a Vitamin C serum immediately post treatment, and then morning and evening for the first week. Vitamin C is a natural anti-oxidant, and anti-bacterial that will help protect the skin during the first few days of recovery from microderm. The best Vitamin C we’ve found, especially for use immediately post microderm is “Pro-C” from A-Cute Derm, Inc. Houston TX. It has a high pH due to alcohol suspension (so it generally does not burn, even on sensitive skin types). The alcohol also enhances penetration. We also recommend A-Cute Derm’s Pro-C Antioxidant Cleansing Gel for daily use, (whether your doing microderm or not).

Many dermatologist find that after switching from traditional crystal microdermabrasion to DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasion, incidence of Acne breakouts are significantly reduced. Clean DiamondTome microderm does not leave crystal particles embedded in the skin, thus eliminating one of the factors suspected in prolonging the weakening of the statum corneum. And DiamondTome practitioners are trained by Mountain Coast Distributors in the prevention of Acne breakouts.

Now the best news of all! A series of DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasoins will improve the function and protection provided by your stratum corneum, and make your skin look fabulous all the while! But like so many other treatments, improvement first requires a “breaking down”, or mild, controlled injury to the treated area, (so the body will respond by building a stronger defense mechanism). Just be sure to take care with your Vitamin C, sun block, (SPF 20 or higher) and try not to touch your face too much!

Enhanced Photofacial with DiamondTome Microdermabrasion

Our clients are getting rave reviews and increased ROI with IPL & DiamondTome (diamond microdermabrasion) enhanced photo facial. Here are some key points about enhanced fotofacial treatments WITH DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasion.

Treatment begins with DiamondTome microdermabrasion. We recommend a double cleanse, degrease, then 2 passes with the DiamondTome diamond microdermabrader. This initial exfoliation gently removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells (the stratum corneum), preparing the skin for the enhanced photofacial.

Think of the removal of the stratum corneum as “cleaning the window” before you shine the light through it.

The stratum corneum is a truly amazing design! It’s like a flexible suit of armor that resists environmental pollutants, contamination, and yes, even the penetration of light, (especially UV, but all wavelengths degrade as they pass through the stratum corneum).

Removing this layer of concave, opaque dead skin cells allows better light penetration of all wavelengths, resulting in an enhanced Photofacial. Better light penetration equals more selective photo thermolysis, and that means better results!  Enhanced fotofacial with DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasion is especially effective for acne and sun damaged skin.

Since DiamondTome is crystal free you can immediately apply contact gel after microderm and perform your fotofacial within your standard recommended parameters.

At about 7 days post treatment, have your client back in for another DiamondTome diamond microdermabasion treatment to accelerate the slough and photo facial recovery.

Our clients typically build in a 10-20% up charge for enhanced photo facial with DiamondTome, (a $300 Tx is $330-$360 if it’s enhanced with DiamondTome).

DiamondTome microdermabrasion and IPL enhanced photofacial go a long way to improve  acne scars, stretch marks, age spots, enlarged pores, wrinkles, rosacea, sun damage and bags under the eyes, resulting in an increasingly soft, smooth and clear appearance. Your clients will be glowing!

Crystal vs Crystal Free Diamond Microdermabrasion

Considering adding microdermabrasion to your skin care practice?

Notice that there are both crystal and “crystal free”  or diamond microdermabrasion machines?

Here are some important facts to consider when deciding which is best for you:

  • Crystal microderm has been around about 10 years longer that crystal free or diamond microdermabrasion, (so depending on your point of view it’s either dated, or has a longer clinical history)
  • Using aluminum oxide crystals involves ongoing disposables expense
  • Some dermatologists claim that the aluminum oxide crystals left embedded in the skin after traditional crystal microderm absorb oils and help with acne.
  • Other dermatologists claim that the aluminum oxide crystals left embedded in the skin after traditional crystal microderm attract or introduce contamination.
  • Combining crystal free diamond microdermabrasion with other Tx, (like IPL, photofacial, PDT, chemical peels or masks) is cleaner, faster and simpler than having to clean off the crystals.
  • DiamondTome is the original, patented crystal free diamond microdermabrasion machine.
  • Diamonds are up to 100 times sharper than aluminum oxide crystals, so diamond exfoliation is less irritating.
  • Diamondtome is the ONLY manufacturer of diamond microdermabrasion machines that document the use of REAL DIAMONDS, (documented and ISO 9001 compliant)
  • Flying crystals, impacting the skin increase non-abrasive irritation. More irritation does not mean better results
  • Crystals will eventually penetrate the vacuum pumpof a traditional crystal microderm machine, meaning a shorter lifespan for the machine and more maintenance.
  • DiamondTome diamond microderm allows you to show your client the actual exfoliated skin you have removed!
