Why Does MicroDermabrasion Cause My Skin to Break Out?

The most common side effect of microdermabrasion is an Acne breakout within the first few days after treatment.

Microdermabrasion is a superficial mechanical peel of the stratum corneum, (or the outer layer of dead, dry skin cells). Microderm exfoliates the surface layers, exposing the underlying, more hydrated layer of skin. The good news is that light reflecting off the more hydrated layers gives your face a certain “glow”. The bad news is that microderm temporarily compromises the stratum corneum, leaving it slightly more susceptible to p. acne infection. The side effect of a breakout is the result of p. acne bacterial infection via the compromised stratum corneum. (check out our products, then scroll down to find out what you can do to prevent a breakout after microderm).

We are your source for advanced aesthetic technologies like:

MedioStar neXT – the worlds fastest most comfortable laser hair removal

DiamondTome, – crystal free diamond microdermabrasion

ClariFusion – Ultrasonic cosmeceutical infusion

HydroWands – Vacuum assisted cosmeceutical infusion (fits the DiamondTome system)

DOT Therapy  – Fractional CO2 resurfacing

UltraPlus VPL – Intense Pulsed Light for Acne, Hair Removal, Photo-Facial and Vascular

Your stratum corneum is an amazing design. It’s like a flexible suit of armor that protects you against not only p. acne, but a myriad of environmental contaminants. As we age the stratum corneum becomes less compact, less hydrated, and less effective. A series of 6 or more microdermabrasion sessions is clinically proven to improve the health and effectiveness of the stratum corneum, making it more compact, and more hydrated. So you’re doing the right thing if you’re having microderm treatments. The key is proper post care to avoid the side effect of an Acne breakout.

We recommend infusion of a lipid repair serum (containing sphingolipids) after DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasion using the HydroWands. Also, topical application of a Vitamin C serum immediately post treatment, and then morning and evening for the first week. Vitamin C is a natural anti-oxidant, and anti-bacterial that will help protect the skin during the first few days of recovery from microderm. The best Vitamin C we’ve found, especially for use immediately post microderm is “Pro-C” from A-Cute Derm, Inc. Houston TX. It has a high pH due to alcohol suspension (so it generally does not burn, even on sensitive skin types). The alcohol also enhances penetration. We also recommend A-Cute Derm’s Pro-C Antioxidant Cleansing Gel for daily use, (whether your doing microderm or not).

Many dermatologist find that after switching from traditional crystal microdermabrasion to DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasion, incidence of Acne breakouts are significantly reduced. Clean DiamondTome microderm does not leave crystal particles embedded in the skin, thus eliminating one of the factors suspected in prolonging the weakening of the statum corneum. And DiamondTome practitioners are trained by Mountain Coast Distributors in the prevention of Acne breakouts.

Now the best news of all! A series of DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasoins will improve the function and protection provided by your stratum corneum, and make your skin look fabulous all the while! But like so many other treatments, improvement first requires a “breaking down”, or mild, controlled injury to the treated area, (so the body will respond by building a stronger defense mechanism). Just be sure to take care with your Vitamin C, sun block, (SPF 20 or higher) and try not to touch your face too much!

Is DiamondTome really Microdermabrasion?

Is DiamondTome really Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is defined in the Wikipedia dictionary as: as: A cosmetic treatment in which the face is sprayed with exfoliant crystals to remove dead epidermal cells. Alternatively it is also defined as: a skin-care technique that uses tiny rough grains or a mechanical medium to buff away the surface layer of skin. The appearance of both definitions reveal the evolution of microdermabrasion that has occurred over the past quarter century or so…

Microdermabrasion & The Skin

Historically microdermabrasion can be traced to a device invented by Drs. Mattioli & Brutto in Italy in1985. The device employed a closed loop vacuum system that used vacuum pressure to extract pure aluminum oxide crystals from a sealed container and propel them through an aperture onto the skin, while simultaneously removing the crystals and resulting exfoliated skin through a second aperture and into a waste canister.

For over a decade this “traditional” form of microdermabrasion remained the standard and microdermabrasion became (and remains) one of the most popular treatments in the aesthetic industry.

In 1998 Engineer Steve Waldron, (Altair Instruments, Inc.) who had already participated in the development and patent of a number of manufacturing techniques and devices involving the precise placement and application of diamond chips for various abrasive functions developed a “crystal free” microdermabrasion system. The device employed the same closed loop vacuum principle applied by Mattioli & Brutto, but replaced the flow of abrasive media with diamond chips fixed to the treatment aperture.

In doing so Waldron’s practitioners were able to accomplish the goal of microdermabrasion (superficial mechanical exfoliation of the stratum corneum) while eliminating many of the complications associated with earlier devices.

  • Eliminating the flow of crystals eliminated crystal penetration of the vacuum system increasing system longevity.
  • Diamonds are a sharper medium and exfoliate more thoroughly with less irritation
  • DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasion requires no clean up of excess crystals and combines more easily with other treatments
  • The need to keep buyng crystals was eliminated
  • Without a reliance on a steady flow of crystals, the DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasion system performs in a uniform fashion, unaffected by clogs or humidity.
  • Crystal residue left embedded in the skin was eliminated
  • DiamondTome systems can operate at much lower vacuum levels, making treatment of even sensitive skin possible.

After over a decade in the marketplace DiamondTome became the industry standard for microdermabrasion.  Among dermatologists, plastic surgeons and aestheticians the advantages have propelled Diamondtome to become the top selling medical microdermabrasion system in the world. Having been freed from the problems of traditional crystal microdermabrasion, and now able to more confidently perform it, DiamondTome microdermabrasion has held it’s place as one of the top two non-invasive therapies in the aesthetic industry.

The DiamondTome family of skin exfoliation systems are the original, patented crystal free skin resurfacing and microdermabrasion machines. All use the patented DiamondTome wands to perform treatments from superficial exfoliation to medical microdermabrasion. DiamondTome achieves a precision medical level mechanical exfoliation to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and photo-damage, to help reduce acne breakouts, and to improve overall tone, texture and improve skin laxity. THe clean finish of a Diamondtome treatment also enhances the penetration of a variety of skincare products.

The DiamondTome Wand is the only patented crystal free microderm & resurfacing instrument. The precisely sized and shaped diamonds are applied to the face of the surgical stainless steel wand in a proprietary pattern that produces reliable, simple, and reproducible results every time. DiamondTome wands may be sterilized via autoclave.
